Tiled inserts were principally a Victorian creation, used in the two ground floor rooms (sitting and living rooms). Tiles were hand painted using a method known as ‘print and tint’ or embossed known as ‘tube lined’.

These ornate inserts usually had either a marble or cast iron surround and towards the end of the century a painted woodern mantle. It was not uncommon to find smaller titled inserts in bedrooms, on upper floors, and kitchens. All titles are interchangeable as they were produced to a uniform size of 6” x 6” through out the 70 year period.
